Is it safe to get dental work in Tijuana? An honest checklist

Type "dental work Tijuana" into Reddit and you'll find two things: thousands of Americans who saved a fortune, and horror stories about hidden fees and unqualified hands. Both are real. The difference isn't luck — it's verification. Here are the seven checks that sort specialist clinics from tourist traps, all doable from your couch.

1. The quote comes in writing, itemized, before you travel

This is the single biggest filter. Hidden fees need somewhere to hide; an itemized quote — implant, abutment, crown, extractions, grafting, each its own line — removes the hiding places. A clinic that won't commit to numbers until you're in the chair is telling you how the visit will go.

2. A named specialist, not "our doctors"

You should know exactly who is placing your implants and what their specialty is. Implant placement is specialist work — in Mexico, Implantología Oral is a formal postgraduate specialty. If the website can't name the dentist, the dentist can't be checked.

3. Public reviews the clinic can't edit

Testimonials on a clinic's own site prove nothing (yes, including ours — we say so on the page). Google reviews are different: public, dated, attached to real accounts. Read the three-star ones too; how a clinic handles complaints tells you more than the praise.

4. A video call before any commitment

Any serious border clinic offers a free virtual consultation. Ten minutes on camera tells you whether the communication, the English and the patience are real — before a single dollar or mile is spent.

5. Brand-name implant systems with documentation

Ask which implant system will go in your jaw and ask for the implant's documentation card afterward. Reputable systems carry international warranties and can be serviced by any dentist in the U.S. later. "Our own brand" is not an answer.

6. A real address you can find on a map

Specialist clinics in Tijuana cluster in Zona Río — the business district, ten minutes from the San Ysidro crossing, full of corporate towers and medical plazas. A pin you can street-view beats any brochure.

7. Aftercare that survives the border

Things occasionally need adjusting — that's dentistry. The question is what happens then. Look for written guarantees† and a clinic close enough that a follow-up is a drive, not a flight. This is Tijuana's structural advantage over flying to other dental-tourism destinations: you can come back next Saturday.

The honest conclusion

Tijuana dental work is as safe as your verification process. Run the seven checks; any clinic that passes all seven — ours or anyone's — has earned the visit. Any clinic that fails one has answered your question for free.
